My Fellow Statians,
As we slowly embark upon a new year, it is good to reflect on the challenges we have faced and the lessons we have learned in 2020. For the first time in our history, we have experienced the harsh and negative impacts that a pandemic has on a society, though we are grateful to God that he has spared us from experiencing the grave realities of Covid-19. Another First in Statia’s history, is the concept of “partial” democracy, where after elections the governing body do not possess their full authority.
Worldwide, the effects of Covid-19 mean adopting and adjusting to a “new normal” which affects our daily lives as we know it. But for us Statians, we also are experiencing some abnormalities in our governing structure with the implementation of the Temporary Act. With the installation of the island Council, Statia finds itself in a peculiar situation where two governing bodies share the responsibility of determining Statia’s future.
As we work towards the restoration of full democracy, we will also be working on building a sustainable Statia, with the input of Statians! As we took the remaining months of 2020 to get an assessment of what has\is transpiring with in Government, 2021 will be the year for action!
The PLP plans to work on the following:
• Continuation of the Harbor development
• Improving and advancing Agriculture and Animal Husbandry
• Work towards the realization of a dialysis center
• Build and improve Social Housing
• Execute Road Projects
• Implement additional Social & Cultural Programs
The above-mentioned plans are just a few out of many, that will help improve the quality of life on Statia by creating jobs, improving our health, healthcare and continue to build our sense of community. We intend to achieve these goals by sitting at the table with the Government Commissioners, only by working together we will be successful.
2020, will go down in history and will be forever remembered as the year the world stood still. The year the pandemic silenced every country no matter their size, wealth, or power. Though challenging and despite the destructive impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, it rekindled a spirit that has been slowly fading away, which is “loving thy neighbor as thyself”. Race, beliefs, ethnicity, or Nationality became non-existent as the world bonded together in the fight against the pandemic. This to, should be our example as we enter into 2021, All Statians working together towards the development of our island as we continue to face the pandemic and many other challenges that will come our way.
We are a God-fearing, resilient, kind, and loving people. I pray God continue to Bless and Keep us, I pray that you may accomplish your heart’s desire and I pray for Good health and happiness for all Statians here and abroad. On Behalf of the Progressive Labor Party board and team, we would like to wish one and all a Prosperous and Progressive New Year.
Preparedness, Humanity, Respect and Togetherness will serve one goal, A better Statia for ALL.
