WILLEMSTAD – A few weeks ago, the management of the Saint Elizabeth Hospital, in accordance with the medical staff, made the decision to temporarily stop all non-emergency operations and to perform only the urgent ones. All this because of the shortage of personnel, equipment, and resources. According to the hospital, the government is not providing enough funds to solve this problem.
Meanwhile, the situation has become worse. There is now a structural lack of medications. This means that care for oncology patients or HIV cannot take place.
Also, the care for each patient is under pressure and this is unacceptable for the medical staff of the hospital.
The medical staff is in constant consultation with the general management of the hospital and supports all the documentations presented to the government which outlines the current financial situation of the healthcare institution.
According to the medical staff, all their petitions to the government to discuss this dire situation has gone unanswered. This is the reason why they have now asked through the media for the government to find a solution.
The medical staff indicated that they cannot continue to wait on an investigation as was announced by the minister of public health Suzanne Camelia-Römer. “We have to remember all those patients that are suffering under this situation.”
