GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten – 2019 has left us and many persons are now looking forward to the new decade, 2020. In fact, some are very optimistic that 2020 will be a year of tremendous success for them, while some are cautiously optimistic.
As the New Year arrived at the turn of 12 mid night on Wednesday, January 1st, many celebrated the arrival of the start of the new decade by going to church, whilst others seized the moment to socialize in a jubilant atmosphere. This was evident throughout the island and in particular on the Board Walk, where scores of persons braved the inclement weather to gather in an effort to witness the spectacular fireworks display that brightened the cloudy skies in and around Philipsburg.
This year’s event in Great Bay marked the 14th edition, since Port St. Maarten has been supporting the country’s largest fireworks display for public enjoyment to ring in the New Year. In spite of the heavy down pour, during the event Wednesday morning, many persons opted to peacefully hug each other and at the same time, wished family, friends and even strangers a “Happy New Year”.
Fireworks activities were also held in Simpson, Maho and on Pond Island, and despite the heavy rain and traffic, commuters were not deterred from getting to the various locations. Evidently, they were determined to be part of the celebrations marking the opening of the New Year, 2020. Shortly after the fireworks display, some people including visitors to the island, made use of the opportunity to take full advantage of the many activities held on the Board Walk to usher in the New Year, 2020.
