WILLEMSTAD – According to Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath, who is also the acting minister of education, measures were extended early this week. The schools will remain closed until April 27.
The premier indicated that the government, together with the school board are going to ease the measures step by step. “We will look at how and in what way the schools can reopen. We are preparing. You have to think of possibilities to keep distance and hygiene measures.”
The schools were closed on March 17, and the school boards together with the ministry of education are looking at how to continue with the exams, in consultation with the Netherlands. “We actually missed 16 school days because we also had a holiday which ended yesterday.”
Rhuggenaath is pleased with the digitization and innovative ideas. However, he is aware that some of the children do not have access to the internet.
“We are working on possibilities to enable all children to receive education at a distance, because that is the new reality for the time being. The university is looking at this. Both for teachers and children because social distancing should be maintained.
The premier says that digitization is something the ministry of education been talking about for a while. This also has priority, it is no longer a wish, but a requirement. It is necessary, says the minister.
Next week there will be more details about the opening of schools and how it will take place.
