USVI – The FIFA President concluded a three-day tour of seven Caribbean Member Associations on Sunday with a visit to the US Virgin Islands, being the first FIFA President to do so.
Accompanied by FIFA Vice-President and Concacaf President Victor Montagliani and a high ranking FIFA/Concacaf delegation, Infantino was able to assess the progress of football development in the Cayman Islands, Curacao, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda and the British Virgin Islands.
The highlight of the last stop was the inauguration of the newly built artificial pitch, housed at the currently under-construction US Virgin Islands Soccer Association (USVISA) Technical Center, which was built thanks to FIFA Forward funds and provides modern infrastructure to further develop football on the islands.
“Today is a historic day for football in the US Virgin Islands,” said the FIFA President speaking to the media. “Thanks to this newly built artificial pitch, the youth, boys and girls, will be able to play football in state-of-the-art facilities. This is not only positive for our sport, but also for the whole local community: this is not a cost, it is an investment which will benefit future generations.”
Infantino and Montagliani were received by the USVISA President Hillaren Frederick and his team, and also held fruitful discussions with the Governor of the US Virgin Islands Albert Bryan Jr. and the Commissioner of the Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation Calvert White.
