WILLEMSTAD – Former director of the Giro Bank, Eric Garcia was sentenced to a prison term of 4 years minus the time he served in preliminary imprisonment.
The judge also agreed with the Public Prosecution on the demand to expropriate 11 million dollars from Garcia which he stole as a care taker of Banco Maracaibo when it was declared bankrupt.
Garcia was arrested immediately after the sentencing.
Banco Maracaibo nv – at that time established in the WTC in Piscadera – was declared bankrupt by the Court of First Instance in 1994. Garcia was appointed as care taker in this case and has diverted more than eleven million dollars from the bankruptcy account to another account and then attempted to hide this embezzlement through forged documents.
