PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – Minister of VROMI, Christopher Wever announced during a tonwn hall meeting held at the Dutch Quarter Community Center last Friday night that road works on the main road in Dutch Quarter will commence on Tuesday. A layer of asphalt will be laid on the main road from the entrance to Zorg en Rust to the roundabout close to Belvedere Estate, one lane at a time.
“The road works to be done at this stage is part of the solution to the existing problems in Dutch Quarter” Minister Wever informed the gathering at the town hall meeting. “Although this is not the completed project, the road works to be done will provide some relief to residents and road users during the holidays.”
GEBE completed the maintenance works that had to be finalized in order for the road work, which is scheduled to be completed on Wednesday night, to commence. At the town hall meeting residents expressed concerns on other issues such as street lights, drainage, sewage, beautification and the paving of side roads. Minister Wever explained that these “other issues” will be dealt with when the project recommences early in the coming year.
On Monday Minister Wever, accompanied by the department head of new works, Kurt Ruan, inspected the area where the work will start. The department of VROMI is urging road users in the Dutch Quarter area to exercise caution when commuting in and through the area as there will be adjustments made to the traffic while the road works are taking place.
