WILLEMSTAD/SINT MAARTEN – The Central Bank is again putting special 5 guilder coins into circulation. It shows the same image as on the commemorative coin in 2013 when 150 years of the abolition of slavery were commemorated.
July 1, today is the official commemoration of the abolition of slavery. On July 1, 1863, 11,654 slaves in Curaçao were given their freedom.
That was about a third of the total population of the colony.
