PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – In light of the political situation on St Maarten, the Council of Ministers led by the Prime Minister the Honourable Leona Romeo Marlin held an urgent press conference on Monday morning.
The purpose of the press briefing was to bring to the attention of the general public many pressing matters, as it pertains to the status of the government.
It was on sunday, two Members of Parliament of the coalition UDP/SMCP namely Dr Luc Mercelina and Chanel Brownbill opted to pull their support from the coalition, indicating that the government was not working in the best interest of the country and it’s people.
However, whilst speaking at the hastily called media briefing Monday morning, in her statement to the nation, the Prime Minister contributed a number of factors to the fall of the government.
Against this back drop, according the Prime Minister, the Council of Ministers decided to invoke article 59, which calls for the dissolution of Parliament , to be followed by parliamentary elections.
