SURFACE WINDS: Today through Monday morning: Northeast to southeast with a light to gentle breeze of 04 to 08 miles per hour, becoming lighter and variable at times.
SYNOPSIS: Due to a relatively stable atmosphere, deep cloud formation and precipitation will be restricted during this forecast period. Meanwhile, the weak Atlantic high pressure ridge will maintain light winds.
Seas are forecast to peak near 7 feet for the next several days due to swells invading local waters. Small craft operators and sea bathers should exercise caution.
STATE OF THE SEA: Slight to moderate WAVES/SWELLS: 4 to 7 feet
SPECIAL FEATURE: At 5:00 am, the center of Tropical Storm Isaac was located near latitude 14.5N, longitude 38.1 W or about 1670 miles east-southeast of St Maarten. Isaac is moving toward the west near 09 mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast to occur over the next few days and Isaac is expected to become a hurricane by Monday.
At 5:00 am the center of Tropical Storm Helene was located near Latitude 13.2 north, longitude 24.0 west or about 2610 miles east-southeast of St. Maarten. Helene is moving toward the west near 14 mph with maximum sustained winds near 65 mph and higher gusts. Additional strengthening is expected during the next few days and Helene is expected to become a hurricane later today.
At 5:00 pm, the center of Tropical Storm Florence was located about 645 miles northeast of St. Maarten, and poses no threat to St. Maarten.
The St. Maarten Meteorological Department will continue to monitor the progress of these systems.
