PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – The St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) and all Carnival lovers will have a very busy upcoming weekend. Three pre-Carnival events will be held this weekend, beginning
on Friday with the Unity Jump-Up anniversary edition.
Known as the longest road event on St. Maarten, the Unity Jump-Up will start in Galisbay on the French side and move all the way over to the St. Maarten Festival Village on the Dutch side. Six bands will accompany thousands of revelers on the trek. Starting time is 8pm on Friday March 22.
The route begins at the Galisbay Carnival Village, Boulevard Dr. Hubert Petit, Rue de la Republique, Rue de Hollande, Bellevue. Once at Bellevue the Carnival foundations of both sides will have a short ceremony at the border monument. The jump-up will then move on through Cole Bay via Union Road, up Cole Bay Hill (AJC Brouwer Rd), Bush Road, Pondfill and ends at the Festival Village.
That event is followed by a Kaiso/Road March Karaoke Competition, held in collaboration with Captain’s Rib Shack Local Food and BBQ on Saturday, March 23.
Anyone will be able to try their skills at singing well-known Calypso and/or Road March songs of the past. The event will be held at Captain’s Rib Shack at Kim Sha, starting at 8:00pm. Persons who want to participate can fill in a registration form which can be obtained at the SCDF Office on Illidge Road or at Captain’s Rib Shack. It will consist of two rounds. The first is on March 23 with the second on April 6, same location, same time. Three contestants will then move on to the finals which will be held as part of the Nagico Senior Calypso Finals in Carnival Village on April 22. The three singers will sing during the intermission of the Senior Calypso Finals as added entertainment for the night.
The final event of the weekend will be the SCDF Pageant Interview and Debate Competitions hosted by Posh Productions. Contestants of the Teen, Senior, Mature and Posh GQ pageants will all be participating in this Interview and Debate Competition. Tickets for this event can be purchased at Van Dorp (both locations), Dollar Bazaar, Plush Boutique, Maleonas, from the contestants and Posh Productions representatives.
The event will be held at the Belair Community Center on Sunday, March 24. Doors open at 3:00pm show time is at 4:00pm.
