THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD – The Netherlands wants to defuse the crisis in the Dutch Caribbean which arose after the seizure by the American oil giant ConocoPhillips on the infrastructure and stocks of PdVSA, the Venezuelan state oil company.
The refineries and storage facilities leased by PdVSA on the islands of Bonaire, Curaçao and St. Eustatius have also been seized, but that is the critical infrastructure of the Kingdom.
Undersecretary of the Interior and Kingdom Relations Raymond Knops ‘hopes for understanding’ from Conoco. He is concerned about energy supplies and employment on the countries and islands of the Kingdom.
Difficult’ contact with Venezuela
“There is administrative contact with the autonomous countries and administrative areas on how to deal with the issue. We want to keep the negative consequences as small as possible, guarantee the security of energy and ensure that no jobs are at risk,” said Knops.
Knops also said that the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs has made contact with Venezuela and that there is also cooperation at official level, but that this is ‘difficult’.
