CAY HILL, St. Maarten – The long awaited St. Maarten Medical Center Eye Care Clinic is now opened. The Eye Care Center, which is now operational at the SMMC Care Complex was officially opened Friday evening
during a ceremony signaling the official opening of the facility.
On hand for the exciting moment were among others, the Minister with the
responsibility for Health, Labor and Social Affairs, the Honorable Emil Lee, Member of Parliament, the Honorable Dr. Luc Mercelina and the Medical Director at the St. Maarten Medical Center, Dr. Felix holiday.
The center, with its state of the art equipment is designed to not only provide much needed Eye Care to the residents of St. Maarten, but to those persons from the neighboring islands, including Saba and St. Eustatius, who need to make use of the services offer at the center.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the facility Friday evening, the Minister of VSA the Honorable Emil Lee told the gathering that the corporation with the BES islands helped in providing the funding for the equipment at the Eye Care Center.
Meanwhile, Ophthalmologist, Dr. Jerrel Pawiroredjo stated that when he first visited the island two years ago for a Rotary Eye Care project, he noticed that there were no eye services available and when he returned one year later, talks for setting up of eye service on the island was held with the Board of Directors.
“World- wide eye care is in high demand”, he said, while highlighting some of the contributing factors in eye disease.
Those according to him, include among others Keratoconus, Cataracts, Glaucoma and Diabetes.
