PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – PMIA Board and members are once more geared up to offer the community of St. Maarten another high-quality educational lecture on LB Scott‘s birthday. This is usually a forum where local citizens from all walks of life come together to listen and participate in annual lectures at the PMIA Hall. However, due to COVID-19 the program will be held virtually this year.
Annually the program features local experts in their field who share their knowledge and experience on educational, socio-economic, and political issues in honor of the memory of the late Lionel Bernard Scott.
Past speakers included local professional such as , His Excellency Governor Drs Eugene Holiday, Lawyer Richard Gibson Sr former Lieutenant governor Dennis Richardson, the late political leader Vance James Jr, the late Educator Camille Baly, NAGICO business owner Mr. Imran Mc. Sood, Art Director Clara Reyes, Drs Jorien Wuite, Gynecologist Michel Petit, Dr. Bryson and General Surgeon F. Holiday, the late Drs Mavis Brooks-Salmon, Environmentalist, Mr. Reuben Thompson, Banker Whitfield Vlaun, former Head VKS Antonio Rogers, IT Entrepreneur Mr. Jean Arnell of Computec , Insurance Broker Mr. N. Henderson, Psychologist, Dr. Judith Arndell and in 2020 , Mr. Anastacio Baker, local businessman.
Lionel Bernard Scott is singled out as one of the stalwarts who played an important role in the development of the then called Windward Islands and in St. Maarten in particular. His contributions as a builder, businessman, politician and a stateman was profound. His strength as a leader through amongst others the PMIA, which he co-founded in 1932 was of the highest caliber.
It is against this background that this lecture series was launched in 2003, with the objective to enhance and promote awareness and discussion on current socio-economic and political issues of interest in this community.
In keeping with current developments on our island St. Maarten and the need to enhance and provide the people with information to enhance their knowledge, foster good habits and stimulate an attitude of resilience, the PMIA has this year chosen to offer you the public yet another thought-provoking topic of interest as we celebrate the 19th, anniversary of this Lecture Series with its title “The impact of COVID-19 on the church”. Delivering this year lecture is one of our very own Mr. Dennis Baptiste, who holds a degree in theology.
