WILLEMSTAD – A motion has been adopted today in the Curaçao parliament to condemn Dutch intervention on St. Eustatius.
The motion emphasizes the right to free elections on St. Eustatius, because the government was put aside by the Netherlands in February. Opposition party MFK requested the meeting to debate this topic. Coalition party MAN condemned the intervention of the Netherlands and voted in favor of the motion by which they obtained a majority. PAR and PIN voted against the motion.
At the beginning of February, the Netherlands decided to intervene on the Windward Island. According to Undersecretary Raymond Knops there was lawlessness, financial mismanagement, discrimination, intimidation and threats among other things. The Island Council was temporarily dissolved and other commissioners were appointed.
According to the opposition and coalition partner MAN, moving aside a democratically elected government with no prospect of new elections cannot be ruled out.
