PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – Minor suspects M.M.M.S and A.A.A., responsible for the robbery of a teacher’s vehicle at the Sint Maarten Vocational Training School were released from prison today, February 8, 2019.
The two minors were arrested on February 6, 2019. The Public Prosecutor’s Office explains while such serious offences in combination with the personal circumstances of these minors would normally call for a longer pre-trial detention, at the moment there is no juvenile detention facility on Sint Maarten.
The Miss Lalie Center has not been reopened post hurricane Irma. Detaining minors amongst the adult population at the Point Blanche prison is in violation of international treaties which Sint Maarten is bound to. “We cannot lock up children without trained staff and suitable accommodation.”
Although M.M.M.S. and A.A.A. have been released, the two remain suspects in the ongoing investigation and will be prosecuted.
