PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – The Sint Maarten Police force and the French Gendarmes conducted a joint preventative control on Monday March 4, 2019 at various locations throughout the island St.Maarten/ St.Martin.
The KPSM along with the Gendarmerie conducted these controls in the Dutch quarter, Sucker Garden, Middle Region and French Quarter areas. The preventative controls which took place from 10:00am to 4:00pm were focused on making sure all motorist that were controlled, cars and bikes alike, were in compliance with the traffic laws , on both sides of the island. This is to ensure that these laws that are set in place to make the road ways safe are followed all times for the road safety of all.
Several cars were pulled over for tinted windows which exceeded the 70% percent visibility law; the owners were asked to remove the tint on the spot. One arrest was made from a car that was stopped; the driver who attempted to flee the scene was in possession of 27grams of marijuana. A total of 10 motor bikes were seized due to lack of documentation, which would show ownership of the bike.
These controls were carried out based on the French and Dutch treaty on police cooperation. They also help further develop the working relationship and cooperation between the French and Dutch law enforcement.
