French authorities board Dutch flaged vessel, drugs found

PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - The frigate of the French Coast Guard yesterday June 28 observed a suspect vessel in the Atlantic Ocean, 600 miles northwest of St. Maarten. It was a yacht, the 'Gehe'die which sailed under the Dutch flag.

In the framework of international cooperation and the San Jose Convention, the French Coast Guard director in his capacity as Country Representative, asked permission to inspect the vessel. Permission was granted by the Director of the Coastguard, after which, the French could proceed with the boarding of the vessel.

There were two (2) persons on board, both Dutch nationals and three bags that they had thrown overboard with drugs, which later proved to be cocaine.

The vessel and the narcotics were seized and two people on-board were arrested.
