20 Calypsonians ready for eliminations

PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - The 2017 NAGICO Calypso eliminations are slated for Friday, March 31st under the tent at Port de Plaisance, starting at 8.00 pm sharp.

Some 20 calypsonians will be participating in this year's elimination, of which ten will "graduate" to the calypso finals on April 20th in the carnival village.

Along with some new faces to the calypso arena, such as Lady Righteous and Doctor Ray, some veterans calypsonians will grace the stage in an attempt

to dethrone the reigning Monarch, Shakiya, St. Maarten's first female calypso monarch.

There is also a chance to see father and son competing, as the Mighty Calix (Carlyle Rogers) takes to the stage while his son Young Calix The Protégé, (Rummini Rogers) competes in the same contest on the same stage.

Familiar faces such as His Majesty Baker Jr, Empress Zee, Kaiso Brat, Ebony Empress, The Fox, The Mighty Pepper, Lady Baker, The Mighty Chipman, Fish De Mega Boss, The Wizard, Repeater, The Mighty Dando, King Beau Beau, The Monitor and King Barrow are back again.

Calypso lovers will see and hear their favorite calypsonians on stage singing one song, with which they hope to be elevated to the finals.

Judges will be looking at the lyrics, presentation, the melody of the tune and the artist's rendition as they select the ten calypsonians who will go over to the finals while the others are eliminated and will have to try again next year.

As the carnival season gets on its way, calypso fans have started anticipating the topics of the 2017 calypsos. Speculations are that GEBE is at the top of the list of topics, while other social and political issues are not too far behind.

Patrons can also look forward to great entertainment by the MC, Fernando Clark.

The entrance fee to the show is $15,= or NAF27,=  Tickets will not be sold in advance, so payment can be made only at the door on the night of the show.

RAW Promotions Foundation, the organizers and promoters of the show, encourages patron to come early to secure a good seat. Gates open at 7.00 pm.
