Pep Showdown was our first annual show featuring high schools and their artistic directors portraying their message against child abuse and molestation in song, dance and drama. We also had our French vs Dutch annual DJ completion.
PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - President of Rio Productions Ms. Brenda Wathey officially announced on Monday, February 20th 2017 that Rio Productions will be participating in the 2017 Carnival Day Parade, which will take place on May 1st and May 2nd in Sint Maarten.
“Secrets”, the name of the Troupe, is being limited to approximately 100 participants divided into several sections, will parade through the streets of the Philipsburg in glamorous costumes inspired by the well-known “Victoria Secrets” runway show.
Ms. Brenda Wathey described these “winged” costumes as “absolute master pieces which are being produced by the some of the most seasoned costume designers in our region”. Wathey further went on to say “…I am grateful for the continued support of our corporate sponsors despite the very tough economic times on the Island”.

This one of a kind Coca Cola® Can will express a new slogan; “Experience Carnival with Coca Cola”. Consumers can purchase their 2017 Limited Edition Coca Cola® Can at major retailers across the island starting the second week of February. The plan is to distribute these cans over a period of 3 months until the beginning of May 2017.

PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - The St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) have chosen troupe leader Jasmine Philips, costume builder Alberto Brooks and long-time sponsor Nagico Insurance as its Carnival 2017 Honorees. The foundation, on an annual basis, selects three individuals/companies to honor for their overall and sustained contributions to carnival. With Carnival stakeholders spread far and wide, the foundation is never short on possible persons to honor.
Three three honorees chosen this year are mainstays in Carnival and, according to the SCDF, is firmly entrenched as part of the overall Carnival brand. In troupe leader Jasmine Philips, the foundation is honoring not just a troupe leader, but someone whose passion is Carnival and who sacrifices personally to ensure that come what may, she is part of the festivities.
Her “Survivors” troupes, both children and adults, participates in the parades every year without missing a step. She has won several troupe and costumed individual awards over the years and, according to the SCDF, seems to be getting better and more creative with her troupes every year. Besides Survivors, Philips has also made her name as a queen pageant chaperone, taking responsibility for at least two contestants annually, sometimes more.
“Jasmine and Survivors are such a big part of Carnival, we can’t imagine the festival without them. Her contributions and participation go back decades and, most importantly, it’s consistent which shows a true love for Carnival. She is always there. She has a big heart, always willing to help the foundation when we ask and assist pageant contestants out-of-pocket. She sacrifices to put her troupes on the road and is a Carnival lover through-and-through. There are not many people more deserving to be honored for their contribution to Carnival than Jasmine Philips,” the SCDF said.
The second honoree is costume builder Alberto Brooks whose costumes have won countless awards and are featured in everything from queen pageants to individual road pieces. Brooks, himself a parade reveler once, is also the architect behind the King Momo statue that is burnt at the end of Carnival festivities. He also makes all of the crowns worn by Junior and Senior Calypso and Roadmarch winners.
He too, said the SCDF, personally gives back to Carnival by helping others when sponsorship scarce and takes great pride in seeing his costumes on display. “When Alberto stopped reveling in the parades he devoted all of his time to assisting participants of the Dutch and French Carnival festivities. His artwork goes a lot deeper than just the large costumes. He makes all sorts of festive hats and outfits for the regular onlooker and constructs floats when asked. He has placed his stamp on Carnival for years and we think it is beyond time he is recognized for it,” the SCDF said.
PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - The St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) over the weekend stressed to persons registered for a season pass and booth holders who have been allotted a booth, that March 1 is their deadline to pay all fees.
Booth holders and season pass registrants each had five months to pay the fees, with installments as an option. The SCDF said that should they fail to pay all fees by March 1, they will lose the opportunity to operate a booth and obtain a season pass for the Carnival 2017 season.

PILIPSBURG, St. Maarten — The St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) has re-introduced something to the Carnival schedule that has been missing for a number of years; a Soca warm-up concert the night before Jouvert morning jump-up. Together with Carib Beer and Captain Morgan Rum, the foundation will host the “Jouvert Jump-Off 2017” concert featuring four Soca artists with local performers.
On stage will by Soca sensations Lyrikal, Skinny Fabulous, Patrice Roberts and Peter Ram. There will also be a number of local acts scheduled for the night who will be announced soon. The foundation has tried different combinations of concerts and other events the night leading up to Jouvert, none has worked as well as doing a Soca concert prior.
“So we decided to go back to what worked for us and sure enough, the response has been great thus far and we are confident that the night will deliver what we want it to: a memorable warm up jam session before Jouvert. We will jam straight into Jouvert,” President of the SCDF Alston Lourens said.
