PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - This is our country's first official observation of July 1 as Emancipation Day, a national holiday for all. Our country Parliament approved the legislation recognizing our ancestry and the period leading to our emancipation as a people.

Permit me to address you directly on a most important matter that Parliament must now deal with: the Emancipation Day legislation that would make July 1st a national public holiday.
The Emancipation Proclamation of July 1st, 1863 put an official end to Slavery on all Dutch territories, including our beloved St. Martin.
