- Culture Commissioner Louie Laveist is looking forward to a meeting with the entities of carnival including the SCDF, St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation,
Booth Holders, calypsonians and the St. Maarten troupe Leaders Association, on Monday July 14th 2008.
Commissioner Laveist told PJD2 Radio on Thursday that he is hopeful that a solution will be found to the current impasse and that the 40th anniversary of Carnival on St. Maarten, scheduled for next year, will be a success.
The commissioner stated that he has been experiencing some health problems which prevented him from responding to the letters of the St. Maarten troupe Leaders Association and the Calypsonians.
Both entities in a letter to the Commissioner and the Island Government of St. Maarten, demanded the removal of the SCDF sighting instances of long term disrespect and abuse of the Carnival Entities. They are demanding the complete removal of the current SCDF members to be replaced by new volunteers.
Commissioner Laveist stated that Carnival 2009, the 40th anniversary of the Island premier cultural festival, will continue and that everything will be done to ensure that.
A meeting is scheduled in the morning and afternoon with all entities of Carnival.
