WILLEMSTAD - Roughly 260 civil servants from the Central Government began working for the Island Territory of Curacao on Monday.
An agreement for their transfer was signed Sunday in Fort Amsterdam by Prime Minister Emily de Jongh El-Hage and Curacao's Commissioner of Constitutional Affairs Zita Jesus Lieto.
In a joint press statement the Prime Minister and the Commissioner called the protocol "important." They're not saying much about the content though.
"The protocol confirms the transfer of tasks and civil servants from the country Netherlands Antilles to the Island Territory of CuraƧao. Also laid down in the protocol is the arrangement of the financial resources belonging to the tasks," the pair said in their statement.
Specific placement of the 260 civil servants has not yet been done. It will very likely be up to the Executive Council to decide where the personnel will be placed.
St. Maarten has reportedly made no attempts to bring any Central Government civil servants from Curacao to St. Maarten. There was also no word Sunday when the Island Government of St. Maarten would sign a similar protocol regarding Central Government personnel who reside here.
