PHILIPSBURG -One student of the Vocational School was arrested on Friday after placing students and faculty of the St. Maarten Academy PSVE School as well as and the police in danger.
This happened during the Career Fair at the school on which got off to a successful start with over 20 companies and entities participating.
The student seen in the photo, threw a bottle at first then a stone over the wall of the PSVE.
The bottle smashed to pieces against the metal roofing of the school after which every one ducked for cover.
But that was not it, a stoned followed and then every one realised that they were in eminent danger.
It was at that time that the police which was engaged at the time in a demonstration, sprang into action with the help of the police dogs.
The officers ran through the gate towards the road parallel to the school wall and with the help of their dogs, they were able to immediately identify the seemingly angry culprit.
The dog sniffed the rock and pieces of the bottle after which they were able to identify who through the objects, reinforcing the demonstration of the police that the dogs can identify the human that was in contact with any object.
The student of the Vocational School was then brought to the campus of the PSVE which he had just attacked and after a short investigation, he was escorted to the Principals office of the school much to the delight of the students that he had just attacked as they had the opportunity to jeer him.
Just last year a student was injured by persons throing rocks and other objects at the school from the road. Principal Solange Duncan noted that they have now gotten to the point where they just try to make the best of it.
She was also elated that the police was around this time to do something about it. The criminal actions of the student did not put a damper on the career Fair at the school as the business that were present, continued to make an impression on the students.
Among the entities present was the Government Information Service (GIS). The department had displays of their G.I.S. products, which range from the news program G.I.S.
Bulletin to the Government Information Page which appears in newspapers from Monday to Thursday and gives the public information about various aspects of government.
The Government Information Service is responsible for the dissemination of information to civil servants internally and to the general public externally.
G.I.S. also displayed the print materials of the department and other promotional materials on particular topics, like the H1N1 flu prevention campaign.
Additional G.I.S. media products shown were, from Television Specials, Documentaries to Public Service Announcements; coverage of the Island Council meetings; special events; the Civil Server internal newsletter, and the Government Employment Opportunities pamphlet.
Interim Head of G.I.S. Rodney Richardson said that it was a good opportunity for the students to see what GIS is about, and to promote working in the field of communications. Additionally its also interesting for students to hear from G.I.S. staff members on their experiences of working in Government as a Civil Servant.
Several GIS staff members spoke to the group of students and explained about G.I.S. in general and/or about their function in particular. The students were invited to visit the department and get hands-on tour and maybe a student internship in the future.
