DSC_0414PHILIPSBURG - Justice Minister Magali Jacoba spent Wednesday afternoon updating Police & Immigration Officers on the ongoing Dismantling Process. The meeting was held at the request of both the Antillean Police Union (NAPB) and the ABVO Union.

One of the main concerns is the legal position of the officers as and after the transition is made to Country Status for both Curacao & St. Maarten. The Minister says those concerns can only be addressed by the Island Territory because the responsibility is being handed over by the Central Government.

“Right now we are facilitating them so that they can also build up what they need to do,” Jacoba said.

The Justice Minister repeated the fact that St. Maarten needs to build infrastructure that exists in Curacao already and re-pledged the Central Government’s support in setting up the new Justice Ministry. So far no formal request has been made for the Justice Ministry to be transferred, but that does not bother the Minister, who also believes the workers should stay calm as well.

“I don’t think they need to be so concerned about that matter because for the time being St. Maarten didn’t do the request so they will stay in the Federal Government,” she said.

The lack of a request is not the only buffer. Officers can take comfort in the Social Statute that dictates how they should be treated both now and in the new situation. That document includes a guarantee that each officer will maintain at least their current position.

Attitude Change!   |72.252.9.xxx |2010-03-11 04:58:06
If these are all the immigration and police officers we have in sxm, we are out
for a rude awakening come country sxm. no wander foreigners dont pay jacoba and
her bta any mind. This meeting here could have been held in an office and not be
shown to the public how understaff this agency really is. Food for thought!

These answers given by the Minister of Justice are disappointing to say the
least! To hear such statements as the above are more than likely to cause every
police and immigration worker to be concerned. The workers have been asking the
same questions for a long time now.
Both government levels officials need to
stop passing the buck. This is not a game of musical chairs. They need to meet,
discuss the concerns of these workers, and have the answers for them. At this
late stage in the dismanteling process, this should have already been done and
made clear to the workers. This is their lives, their careers, their livelihoods
that the Ministers are toying with. Uncertainty about ones future is not a nice
position to be in. Come on! You elected or appointed officials need to do better
than this. These responses given, general attitude and way of working is
disappointing and not acceptable from sitting ministers of justice & personnel
and state secretaries.
Maybe the light upstairs will go on one day when we
wake up and find ourselves without any police or immigration workers. Those
people should definitely not be treated in this manner. FOEI! En nogmaals FOEI!
