DSC_6710lee1PHILIPSBURG - The SHTA believes that the Executive Council has set a dangerous premise by stating that the State and Church are not separate.

Furthermore, Government has opened the door for every denomination (Catholic, Hindu, Jewish etc) to seek similar funding for their establishments.

The SHTA tried contacting Commissioner Frans Richardson and Lt. Governor Richards to get some insight into this decision, but they were both unavailable.

Secondly, the reasoning behind this action is questionable. Based on publications in the media, Government followed proper procedure by putting a stop to the construction of the church, where no permit had been issued.

Therefore, the need for compensation remains questionable. Under normal terms, this would have had to be dealt with by the courts.

Lastly, the SHTA is concerned about the lack of fiscal responsibility. Recent meetings with the CFT and the Executive Council revealed that Government needs to increase its revenue stream in order to balance its budget and thus all Capital expenditure needs to be prioritized.

The SHTA understands that this decision has not been approved by the Department of Finance and plans to follow all available avenues to have this decision questioned.

What the hell???   |65.208.122.xxx |2010-03-10 00:21:01
Ofcourse church and stte needs to be kept apart!! Those two commissionersmust be
crazy to make those staements! They sound like two ignorant vote getters that
fail to know there history. Religion should ALWAYS e a choie ( a dumb one n MY
opinion ), but should have no place in how a country is run. Granted
some......alot of these politricktians need GOD in there life, but not they way
MAN (religion ) sees fit.
They both must have been hyped up at the church to
get more votes, that's why they spoke out of ignoance.
unbelievable   |200.7.51.xxx |2010-03-10 02:01:11
It is obvious that everyone else with sense would know that church and state
should be seperate except the N.A. Like Mrs. Wescott Williams said, and i agree
that its lack of knowledge by the N.A. that they would make such a decision.
laughing stock   |200.7.51.xxx |2010-03-10 02:07:05
The N.A is trying to say that they want to do something Holy and good, but they
forget that politics does not work that way. Casinos and brothels are financed
by the owners, not tax payers money. What kind of Commissioners are in
government?, but then again ONLY IN ST.MAARTEN.
Crazy!   |72.252.9.xxx |2010-03-10 02:23:44
This situation reeks!!!

Worse yet, Reverend Brissett defended government's
decision at the ground breaking ceremony.

The end DOES NOT justify the
means.
I agree   |72.252.11.xxx |2010-03-10 02:32:48
We need to PRIORITIZE... I agree!!...

Invest in what we, the PEOPLE (all not
some), will be part of... and make use of...

The church is separate from the
STATE!
guys read the headlines   |72.252.14.xxx |2010-03-10 03:33:16
The CFT only follow one avenue for obtaining funds to balance the Budget; they
are like the IMF
Leave the people to suffer ,tax them, tax the buisnes community
and if that ain't enough take their land.
Placing sxm in the carribean as the
most expensive Island , buisnes will go else where and we will be left with a
CFT still trying to bleed us.
Dumb & Dumber   |190.102.2.xxx |2010-03-10 07:18:42
Frans and Hyacinth 2 of a kind. They should fire their advisors for putting them
in this position , but on the other hand if they saw the script before they read
it and with a bit of common sense they would know that Religion and Politics
spells "Unrest" .They along with whoever from The Methodist church have
cast a very "NEGATIVE" light on what "Methodism" represents in
this community .
Shame Shame Shame !!!!
WERTY   |72.252.9.xxx |2010-07-17 17:53:27
before doing things think before you act sxm people are suffering, stop using
politcs to try to get votes, start finishing undoned projects .
mechanicman   |200.7.44.xxx |2010-03-10 09:14:26
They made a big boo boo with the permits and now were trying to cover their
butts and made an even bigger boo boo saying church and state not separate and
now they look like idiots. think before you speak...
Re: Lack of basic knowledge   |216.152.166.xxx |2010-03-10 09:40:15
Evident is that our current leaders lack basic historical knowledge. Then to top
it all off they say that goverment will build a church. If this is correct, we
would be heading back to situation like Afganistan where the religous leaders
will be determining our laws. SXM brace your self. No more freedom of speach,
freedom of religon. Guy you screwed up big time. Is that you both really want
for SXM?
