PHILIPSBURG - Roland Duncan, minister of constitutional affairs said the fall of the Dutch government does not affect the formation of the countries Curacao and St. Maarten or the dismantling of the Netherlands Antilles as much as is possible.
He said he is not pessimistic about the matter but that he would rather wait and see what happens first. "We will deal with this situation on a day to day basis as it develops," Duncan said.
In fact, he said under these circumstances, the islands need to hasten the work being done. However, he noted that there are viewpoints of some Dutch parliamentarians that are meant to intimidate the islands.
He said this is not fair to the islands, as the Antilles has been meeting all the terms of the agreements signed on with the Dutch.
"We have been negotiating three and half years; what is so controversial about my exercise of the right of self-determination as laid down by international law?" asked Duncan, adding that he has heard a lot of hot air on the subject.
He has called for cooler heads and common sense to prevail in the midst of this political debacle, as it relates to constitutional reform of the Netherlands Antilles.
