PHILIPSBURG - President of the Chamber of Commerce Glen Carty stressed that the law suit against GEBE is not against any individual but rather against GEBE to ascertain the problem at the company regarding its ability to supply power to the St. Maarten community and what recommendations can be offered to solve the problem.
Carty said what they are asking seeking in the lawsuit, is for the judge to appoint an independent individual or company to "look under the hood" with the situation concerning the generator problem at GEBE.
The idea is to also come up with recommendations. "Businesses have to plan. They need to know if they can rely fully on GEBE to do their business (or) if they have to invest in generators.
We have seen recently there have been several cases of generators catching fire because perhaps people are overusing the generators (as they were designed to be standby generators," Carty said.
The Chamber president added that once the judge grants permission for this independent appointment and the report is finalized, the Chamber will determine the next move.
Carty said the court case is an ongoing process that was filed since December last year. The date for the court proceedings was received on March 8.
The Chamber is suing GEBE, on behalf of the persons, companies and enterprises who have suffered damages resulting from power outages. The Chamber had given GEBE seven days to provide information on a number of concerns in a letter dated October 21, 2009.
The Chamber wanted to know if GEBE was doing anything to address the power outages and how soon they would be implemented. GEBE responded to the letter but the answers were not satisfactory, according to the Chamber.
