PHILIPSBURG - Prime Minister Emily de Jongh El-Hage says there could very well be a new Lt. Governor before October 10th, 2010.
Sources have indicated that St. Maarten's Lt. Governor Franklyn Richards may leave office on March 1st. Reportedly Roland Tuitt or Reynold Groenevelt would replace him, but the Prime Minister is not confirming or denying these changes.
De Jongh El-Hage says there is a possibility that one or more Lt. Governor's may leave office before the new countries are established on October 10, 2010.
At that time they would be out of a job on St. Maarten & Curacao because the new countries will have Prime Ministers.
"Maybe the Lt. Governors will leave because they got a new job, because they have to look for himself and then we have to see, but at this point no," she told the media on Friday.
In the new structure the Prime Minister of St. Maarten and the one of Curacao will head their respectively elected administrations. Right now the Lt. Governor sits as Chair of the Executive Council. The Governor of the country will simply be the representative of the Sovereign with no seat or vote in the government.
Saba, St. Eustatius or Bonaire will maintain their Lt. Governors because their relationship with the Netherlands as public entities will allow for this system to be maintained.
