PHILIPSBURG - Governor and Local Chief of Police Franklyn Richards has expressed grave concern with regards to the crime situation on the island, and is of the opinion that the crime wave has to end.

The Local Chief of Police also admonishes residents and passer-by’s for not alerting the Police to the burning of several stolen vehicles in bushes in Dutch Quarter over the weekend as well as persons verbally threatening Police officers while they were carrying out their investigation in the area.

“The Police are reliant on community assistance in the fight against crime. A person not alerting the Police to two vehicles on fire in the bushes is a derelict of civic duty and responsibility towards society. Evidence was probably destroyed in the fire.

“Threatening Police officers while they carry out their crime scene investigation is also not acceptable behaviour coming from what we assume were law abiding citizens.

These actions do not overshadow the contributions that have been made to law enforcement on the island, and I continue to encourage law abiding citizens to help the Police because it’s a community effort in fighting crime,” Governor Richards observed.

Richards says that he will be looking into additional law enforcement measures that can be implemented as a consequence of the recent increase in crime. These measures would include extended and far-reaching authority to the police and the prosecutor’s office.

Some of the measures that could be implemented are the closure of businesses, offices or homes that violate public order; the temporary detention of a person or groups of persons who ignore specific law and order rules; when there is a serious indication of wrongdoing in a certain neighbourhood; police searching vehicles and persons as well as instructing drivers to open enclosed packages.

Governor Richards added that the additional measures should not have the semblance of becoming a police state. “The Police are legally obliged to take all reasonable steps to protect people and property where there is a real and immediate risk to them from the acts of another.

“The most recent event and a point of grave concern is the incident involving shots being fired from a school bus transporting students. Incidents involving the loss of life are to be condemned and cannot be tolerated under any circumstance.

“Several robberies of homes and businesses are also a matter of great concern. An integral approach is needed to combating crime considering the situation is made more complicated because of the island’s geographical location and open borders,” Governor Richards told the Government Information Service (GIS) on Monday.

Governor Richards says combating crime is not only a task for Police and the Justice system, but also for parents, schools, the church, social institutions, the business sector and the average citizen.

“As we prepare to become a country, aspects of security become our collective responsibility. Government is also ultimately called upon to dedicate the necessary attention to fighting crime.

An example of this is adequate street lighting which still has to become a reality in some areas,” Governor Richards Local Chief of Police pointed out.

At the initiative of the Local Chief of Police, the Safety Plan St. Maarten was developed in 2007. The plans listed a number of recommendations to contribute to a safer community.

One of the recommendations is the development of a qualitatively and quantitatively strong (criminal) justice and law enforcement system and this is one of the key areas of constitutional renewal and a priority for Country St. Maarten.

He is unfit for giving advice on crime. He and only he knows why. we are tired
of talk and we need action. When is he as chief of police going to get the
police to do their job at protecting the people of this country. He has dropped
the ball and it is about time that he is removed from office. 2 terms is far too
much. we need a new governor with new ideas. Just like Sarah his time has come.
When the country is totally destroyed then we will ask him to leave. He is the
island greatest hypocrite. Time to leave, Mr Queens representative.

Too many "intentions", and no action. Controls are the way way to go! To
many black tinted cars. To many unlicesened drivers. Too less visibility of
police officers in districts. Control, Control, and more Control!!!

With all due respect Mr. Governor, saying it and doing it are two grave
differences. We MUST DO SOMETHING about crime on the island. Either have harsher
sentences, or really crack down on gun control....something have to be done.
Things are really getting out of hand. Residence and toursits alike are becoming
more and more fearful of what is happening.

It is about that time when we need to put stringent measures in place.
Although
a bit too late but still I believe it is never too late seeing the violent
crimes that are commited almost every day.
We need to feel safe in and out of
our homes again after all this is the "Friendly Island"
Good JOB
Governor

Keep it up!

As usual we look for a scapegoat.
Crime is not only the Lt Governor's problem
but the entire island's. He failed but we did too. Remember when we were
accepting 'free gifts' for a vote? or when we sold every piece of land we own
for .000 and the owners are now selling same plot or split in 2 for 5x that
amount, We now have squat? Or when we go by the Census offices (Mairie on the
French side) acknowledging children that don't belong to us? Old men marrying
19-21 years old spanish women to give them their 'rights' (passport), while the
chica is outside hanging to a 'spanish man'? So we forgot!!!
The Hill behind
Cake House is a good example of how corrupt our people are. Take responsibility
for the mess we created together. When we gamble our paychecks in Casinos and
have our offsprings go out for lack of food and parent-ship and rob others to
eat a meal or buy things they don't need. Oh, what about you parents who have
things in your house you didn't buy? The thing now is that kids do it once it's
fun, do it twice, thrice they get intoxicated with power until a day someone get
killed then all hell wants to break loose. Enough! That coffee is old and cold,
time for a fresh pot. Get your children off our public streets and being a
nuisance and an embarassement to others. Don't go to church Sunday morning and
in the Casino by midday. Don't see a crime and don't report, you are giving the
criminals safe shelter in your community. These blogs are where we come to
offload our ugliness and call each other names.
Ask GOD for forgiveness first
and then do something about it, call in and make a difference for this country
(soon to be).
We have no one but all of us to blame.

We are always blaming
someone else for our ills.
