PHILIPSBURG - With mostly negative press concerning our youths, PEACE IS Foundation is delighted at the recent reports about reduced violence and improved academic performance in some of our schools.
PEACE IS Foundation is aware of the ongoing effort in the schools to bring about change, especially by the teachers and guidance councilors. PEACE IS Foundation has supported these efforts since its inception.
Articles have appeared in the press highlighting reduction in violence by two secondary schools; St. Maarten Vocational School and St. Maarten Academy PSVE.
Over the past two weeks, we have also seen reports highlighting Vocational School rewarding the entire Class of 1-1 for not having a single low grade and St. Maarten Academy PSVE honoring 43 students for maintaining averages of 75% or more.
PEACE IS commends the students for making such positive strides in both academics and tolerance. The teachers and councilors who have been working with the students also deserve to be commended.
PEACE IS also singles out the media for special praise for their prominent coverage of these positive developments, including the carrying of two such stories as front page articles by one newspaper.
PEACE IS also takes note of the recent reports of violence involving a shooting incident from a school bus and a stabbing incident in one of our schools.
These unfortunate incidents serve to underscore the need for the entire community to engage the youths in a positive way. We hope to see more positive stories, rather than negative ones, in our media and otherwise regarding our youths.
PEACE IS Foundation is a non-profit organization formed in 2007, with a mandate to forge meaningful partnerships to encourage acceptance, caring and empowerment in schools.
