Island Government signs off on 9M guilders worth of contracts with USONA |

PHILIPSBURG - Leader of Government Commissioner William Marlin, fresh back from formation talks in Curacao, Wednesday signed contracts with USONA for financing totaling, 9 million guilders.
The contracts were signed in the presence of finance Commissioner Xavier Blackman, Director of USONA Reginaldo Doran, other governmental officials as well as heads of departments that the financing will cover.
The money will be spent in a number of areas including departmental support, security, education and infrastructural work.
The contract for the 21 months upgrading project for the Legal Affairs Department was the first to be signed.
Marlin stated that the project will cost 2.4 million guilders and it will go towards obtaining the needed personnel to prepare legislation for country St. Maarten. Three legal experts will be initially brought in to start the process Marlin stated.
Education will also be a beneficiary for up to 1.6 million guilders. Commissioner Marlin stated that this will include funding for youth related projects, aimed at taking the young people "off the block".
Training he stated is vital as it can turn the other wise wasted human resources into employable personnel. The financial assistance for these projects will not be limited to one individual location Commissioner Marlin noted.
The financing for three bed room high rise housing, was also signed on Wednesday by the Commissioner. 5.3 million guilders will be spent on that project, 4.4 by USONA and 900,000 guilders by the Island Government.
