PHILIPSBURG - While we have shifted into first gear on the “paved” road to country status, the dust has not settled on the back roads, where day to day challenges remain a balancing act for local government officials.

Officials who should give sufficient attention and public accountability on various tasks that affect our (business) community directly.

This is no different for St. Maarten’s Local Chief of Police, Lt. Governor Franklin Richards, who recently received a request for more clarification on the recent rise of criminal activities, from Island Council Member Maria Buncamper-Molanus.

In a letter to the Chief of Police, Buncamper-Molanus asked for statistical information to clarify whether an increase in crime has indeed occurred, in particular the ones of a more violent nature that have resulted in the deaths of local business men, in comparison to previous years.

While she acknowledged that the responsibility of Justice falls under the Central Government, she also questions if we including the Office of the Local Chief of Police should be viewing things differently considering that the challenges we face with crime seem to be escalating.

Various efforts to combat crime were highlighted in Buncamper-Molanus’ communication to the Chief. Including: The Central Government’s proposed reorganization and coaching of the Windward Islands Police Management Team, an ongoing campaign to recruit new police officers, an established cooperation between the police forces of the Windward Islands and Rotterdam and various project proposals submitted by St. Maarten, to ultimately improve the police force as a whole and provide the St. Maarten citizens and visitors alike, with a sense of higher security and peace of mind.

Mrs. Buncamper-Molanus requested more clarification on what exactly the agreement is between Rotterdam and St. Maarten and more facts and figures on the current recruitment status. Basically, she is requesting an update on the aforementioned initiatives and an explanation on the results of all these efforts, negative or positive.

After a list of eight queries, Buncamper-Molanus stated: “More police presence and proper equipment appear to be the recurring calls from those involved. If this is indeed the main issue, why are these issues not given priority? Yes indeed the Central Government is responsible for Justice. We have had Justice Ministers come and go and we have the same problems recur.

The constant factors in this equation are the people of St. Maarten, crime and the responsibility of the Local Chief of police on the island. So should we be doing things differently leading up the constitutional reform? Should there be more involvement from the Island Government and the Local Chief of Police?”

The Island Council Member concluded by stating that fighting crime is everybody’s business and requested a prompt response from the office of the Local Chief of Police as this issue is a critical concern and would benefit the people of and the visitors to St. Maarten.

Here we go again   |72.252.9.xxx |2010-01-26 05:25:45
You write your own article writing about yourself and what did. Then you send a
pretty picture of yourself. Haven't we learn that it is not about an individual
or a politician? So here we go again "just another politician."
PEOPLE PLEASE STAND UP NOW   |72.252.10.xxx |2010-01-26 05:49:23
I cannot believe that NOBOBY wants to deal with this issue at hand. People are
being KILLED and it's business as usual. I don't care which party or politician
has be kicked in his A** but let's do something. All we've been doing is talking
but NOTHING happeniong with our police force restructering and getting new
officers here. For my part bring in the Dutch police / Marine and start cleaning
up this rock before it becomes anything else. We must start doing now and those
in power with your landslide victory I hope you don't screw it up. Remember
NOTHING LAST FOREVER. Even the mighty OBAMA up the ...stream right now.
Community Councils   |200.7.53.xxx |2010-01-26 06:15:37
Community Councils organized a public meeting a few weeks ago..the Councilwoman
was not present.
Last night a public meeting was organized in Belvedere with
several speakers, including a police officer, government social workers and a
pastor. The Councilwoman was not present.
So she sits home and writes a nice
letter to the Lt.Governor without listening to what the people in the
communities have to say?
reply Community council   |200.7.63.xxx |2010-01-26 17:06:45
Her article has NOTHING to do with the meetings of community councils or
presentations of the police. What ever the community council wants done does not
mean it will be done nor does it have anything to do with the staistics or the
involvement of the Dutch. while I'm sure the community council means well and
that the information gathered should be forwarded to the government don't
confuse the task of the two. You may not like that she wasn't at the meeting to
hear your complaints but it shouldn't be so that the politicians should be at
every meeting held in the communities and all presentation held on the island.
Remember they to are human. Noticed not ONE other politician touching the issue.
You guessed why? It's a difficult issue and someone just died. Next week you'll
hear all of them blowing there trumpets in the island council meeting. That's
politics. Kudos Maria for questioning now and not later.

way up to 2009 from crime on sxm.

chief of police have to give acount to her specaily ?
BES(S)-Islander   |200.7.40.xxx |2010-01-27 03:37:25
Chief Doran has ONE person to give account to: THE LT. GOVERNOR.

The Lt.
Gov. has ONE person to give account to on affairs pertaining to law enforcement:
THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE.

So, if she wants to demand she must know where to
direct it....

Kill Criminals   |74.117.85.xxx |2010-01-26 16:30:41
What our island needs is capital punishment. Kill the criminals...BUT
REALLY..this wont happen...real fact of matter is to look in to a lot of
factors...prime importance is that if some one tries to protect himself in his
own property in self defense and kills a robber, there should be no sentence
against the defender. Now the robber knows that if he breaks in to a house and
is confronted, he has an option to kill and escape, but the defendant / property
owner has no choice..he can not resist.
God help SXM and it's people   |200.7.63.xxx |2010-01-26 16:49:07
When I read these blogs I understand why we killing people her left right and
center and nobody cares. Yes the had a setting at Belair and I was there but I
sure as hell can't recall Doran or the prosecutor saying about the crime being
better than in the past or what exactly the Dutch coming to do for us here in
SXM. You see people all you do is open your yaps and let out hot air. I don't
care what party, faily or anything else this lady comes from. What I care is
that the Governor tells us what's going on. The police force including Mr Doran
have no damm idea were they going or coming and the chief prosecutor just reach.
So in my humble view lady politician ask you questions since some of them
"done know" but I don't know
What politics!   |200.7.63.xxx |2010-01-26 16:58:28
If Maria was playing politics she would have gone after the NA party who are in
fedral government and are responsible for crime. She asked the Governor for
statistical clarification on facts and the involvement of the Dutch which Mr.
Doran has no influence on, and all you people talk about is that she belong to
the Sopranos and other crap. Do you understand why we up shit creek on this
island. I hope some of you'll read the article's off Mr. Louie Duzandson
"Crab Mentality" posted about 2 weeks ago in the papers and you'll
understand your idiotic blog.

Dear Maria,

Instead of asking asking, asking, and asking, you should come up
with recommendations. Your quest to come in the lime light again, should take a
positive approach and contribute to solving crimes and other punishable acts.
Let us hear your ideas on reducing crime. Despite the two or three murders,
statistic show that crime has been reduced. Now my two contribution to reducing
crime even further. Traffic controls on a regular basis, by checking for valid
drivers licence. Removing of dark tinted glass from vehicles where you can not
see the driver. Ask the French side authorities to cooperate with our
authorities by stationing police at the borders on an alternating basis. Perhaps
every two hours each side could manned the borders. So, if a crime is commited
on either side, the borders will be alerted, and be ready for any strange action
coming their way. My dear Maria, that's my contribution in helping to reduce
crime in general. Now you follow!
Tabanka   |190.102.2.xxx |2010-01-27 07:11:55
Maria.....there are various crimes committed in a society. Whit collar crime
which go unpunished is also crime. She committed whit collar crime through her
foundation and gets away sctoch free. Now she and sarah trying to get the shit
back on track, so she is profiling big time. If they believe NA done with them
they lie. More licks coming in 2010. Theo is not coming back and Louis Long
gone.Frankie Meyers aint going back. He only went on stage after having a few
drinks. DP sucks.
