PHILIPSBURG - Community Councils from across the island of St. Maarten, met on Monday evening to discuss what is perceived as a rising crime problem on the island.

The meeting was a private one and it is not clear what has been agreed on, if any, during Mondays meeting which took place on the Cannegieter Street in Philipsburg.

Seemingly the coming together of the various Community Councils on Monday may have been sparked by the recent murder in Dutch Quarter of Eric Yuan Sam who was gunned down on the job.

After the murder of Sam, there has been a loud and clear out cry from a frightened community, calling for the killer or killers to be apprehended.

Eric Yuan Sam who was murdered on Wednesday December 30th 2009, was a well loved and respected business man in the St. Maarten community and it can be expected that a further response to the senseless killing may be forth coming.

Up until this point the police have been able to arrest a suspect in the murder investigation even though there has been persistent rumors indicating that there was an arrest.

However the police have maintained their position that have not yet arrested anyone for the murder.

Sorry I don't mean to be rude with my comment name but why have the communities
waited this long to take action?

Action had to be taken years ago, the
people of the community need to start requesting the politicians to start making
tougher penalty laws. As long as the penalties remain so mild and the judicial
system remain passive, crime will remain high.

As long as one can commit
murder and receive 3 years, but steal money and from a financial institution and
have the law book thrown at you. CRIME WILL REMAIN HIGH, reason being money is
worth more than the value of life!
organise a protest   |200.7.60.xxx |2010-01-05 04:26:21
The people want a protest or a public show of solidarity against crime. Too many
criminals living among us and causing havoc to our people

What we need is a simple REWARD system. Put up 000.00 and I am sure someone
is going to snitch and collect. these culprits are dangerous and need to be off
the streets of St. Maarten. This man from all indications was a good, caring St.
Maartener. Making a contribution to this island in a positive way. To his family
and friends I feel your pain and I hope and pray these dogs are brought to
justice. May he rest in peace.

This is a great start. People should get involved and not sit on the side line
and complain. We are good at the latter. If you have something to contribute,
then get off your behinds and join these community councils who are serious
about assisting the law enforcement. SXM was a better place, let's show that we
are still conscience and willing to make an effort to bring crime under control
