PHILIPSBURG - A number of areas along the islands coast line, was flooded by the rough seas that the island experienced on Sunday and all of Monday.

The operations of SOL main fuel depot was seriously affected which had implications for regular fuel transfer to Sol Aviation Services storage at the PJIA.

A press release from the airport stated on Tuesday that they are monitoring the situation and working with SOL Aviation Services aimed at limiting the effects to flight operations to and from St. Maarten.

The cemetery in Caybay also felt the full effect of the heavy waves on Tuesday.

The wall was once again battered and at the same time, a backhoe operator tried to provide more support for the defending wall.

The Beacon Hill area was also affected. At one point, members of the control unit had to be put into action to ensure that traffic could pass safely at the thresh hold point of rwy10.

The beach in-front of the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Hotel was also affected. The sea water could be seen traveling from the ocean through the inlet towards the salt pond.

The marine conditions were rough on Tuesday and this was due to above normal waves in breakers caused by northerly swells. According to the Met Office, the marine conditions will be affected through the second half of the week.

It should be noted though that the sea in some areas was calm, but a heavy ground current could clearly be seen.

Something smells in SXM   |208.78.54.xxx |2009-12-30 02:39:31
How arrogrant of mother nature to try and reclaim its own.

Don't they know
SXM wasted millions clearing and filling and concreting to make room for more
tourists and now the sea has the audacity do this to us.

Of course we all
knew this would happen. But don't worry the levels will drop soon and it will be
all forgotten about until the next flood.

Let's us keep planning and leaving out the environment and nature out of the
equation and see how far we will progress. The problem with leaders today is
that they don't have the ability to solve any problems because they are not
students of oceanography, agronomy, agriculture, gravitational and magnetic
physics, etc. So they no nothing about the factors that operate the world. We
are tied in with nature and all the environment surrounding us. To negate or
neglect any part of that will be damaging to ourselves and our own aims. One
catastrophe from nature on SXM can wipe us out if we are not properly prepared.
