PHILIPSBURG - In connection with the very busy Christmas season and the many shoppers walking in the streets of Philipsburg, the following measures will be taken with regards to the safety of the shoppers and a better flow of motorized traffic:

On Thursday December 24th and Thursday December 31st the section of Front street between Sea Palace and Emmaplein and Back street between Emmaplein and the Kadaster (Last Bus stop) will be closed off to all motorized traffic.

These streets will be closed from 07.00 a.m. untill closing.

All persons who are using public transportation will be able to catch a bus or a taxi on the Cannegieterstreet or the Walter Nisbeth road (Pondfill road).

In connection with these temporary traffic measures and due to the fact that Philipsburg has limited parking, ONLY that piece of property behind of Kitty's Kitchen which has recently been filled and which is still under construction, will be open temporarily to the general public for parking.

( NOT ANY OTHER PART OF THE RING ROAD UNDER CONSTRUCTION) This area will be open for parking as of Wednesday December 23rd until Monday January 4th 2010.

this is a country that warrants serious measures against these politicians when
it comes to organization. They take out all the prking from frontstreet. The
stayover tourist cant find a place to park in Philipsburg, then they block off
the road by Sea Palace forcing the tourist who are not acquianted with
Philipsburg to make a U turn and go straight back to the Tourist area. So the
stores in Philipsburg can't make a dollar all day long. The tourist on the boats
hardly buy anything in town. The stay over tourist are the ones who spend their
money in Philispburg. When will Theo and his Harbor people understand what is
happening to this island. sooner or later all the stores in Philispburg will be
closed, cause they can not afford to operate their businesses any longer. They
will move to Anguilla and St. Kitts and then we will see who will pay the high
taxes for htem to settle their high bills to Windward Roads and KOOP.
they are
destroyin St. Maarten and not a peep from no one. When will someone speak
up.Guess only Diamonds International and Danny's must make money
Not so simple!   |72.252.9.xxx |2009-12-23 06:33:24
If the stay over tourist, who you obviously are only catering to and not the
local as well, wants to shop he or she will do so. You business folks in
Philipsburg need to understand that you are selling overpriced, inferior,
counterfeit and in some cases stolen goods. Further, the cruise tourists are
seeing identical goods in every port they land. You are not offering anything
unique, exciting or affordable. You are your own undoing. You do not even
decorate Philipsburg anymore to give the feeling of Christmas and so encourage
locals and tourist to come to browse which any good business person knows leads
to purchases. Where are your specials, discounts and in-shop possibility of
instant winnings? Even if it is a bottle of Peardrax, you can hold little
give-aways sporadically to lure customers. Consider this a FREE marketing
strategy report for which no dollar will be asked....all in the spirit of
Christmas.
Now get off the government's back. It is doing what it has to do;
now you do what you ought to do and stop complaining like a spoiled child.

Why not closing down the police sation and let all men and women come out on the
street to oversee a save christmas shopping
concerned business man   |200.7.52.xxx |2009-12-22 14:36:47
when front & back street is open for vehicle people don't get place to park so
they don't want to come to town to shop. how you can expect when front & back
street merchants to do good business when the streets are closed.
stop playing
politics. your destroying what ever little is left. ask the businesses if they
are doing business for Christmas. closing street is not going to help because no
one drive in the speed in front & back street cause road any way is very
narrow.
police bike patrolling & foot patrolling will be very good help
close all shopping areas   |72.252.9.xxx |2009-12-22 16:12:32
They need to close all streets front and back. tell the businesses to close for
good ASAP.
Transform the area as parking for beaches, parks etc.The tourists from
the ship are not spending any money, and those who are, are not being
facilitated.SO WHY HARASS the population of this island (locals and stay-over
tourists)The harbor makes money on head tax from cruise passengers. Why do they
care about others?
Every month you pay your wages,TOT, salary taxes, gebe, road
tax etc etc.and work for the government.A casino worker with tips will have more
net income than a businessman. And now they also want to strike.! LORD HELP US

25feb what a brilliant vision. You need to be in government. I guess all tax
paying citizens will vote for you. Close the police stattion, these people do
not need airconditioning office jobs, they have field work to do - SAFETY. The
BTA was implemented too many Guyanese and Jamaicans are on the road. We have
enough criminals elements, we do not need more. Charity starts at home, and that
is what the Government does not understand
Parking   |200.7.35.xxx |2009-12-23 04:25:47
We need more parking in town area!
corporate citizen   |200.7.60.xxx |2009-12-23 15:19:13
we NEED high quality merchandise, the fake stuff in town at high prices are what
is killing town. I for one will not shop again in Philipsburg, even if I
purchase a ticket to the states + hotel accomodation for two days I am cheaper
off. I second to turn Philipsburg into an enterainment park. Sent all those
indians packing. They are only for themselves, sent their children to private
school, construct big houses, have the most expansive cars, whilst their
employees are starving on minimum wage. what a joke
Balance   |200.7.57.xxx |2009-12-24 08:39:15
We need a balance in this society. The writer above is right. The erhcandise
sold by the indians are limited to Jewelry and electronics. Go back and ask why
did all the local people lease or sold their property.Too many family members
wanted their share. St.Maarten had very successful merchants, the hazels, the
cartys, the vlauns, watheys, and many more smaller shop keepers, but their kids
had no business interest and they all wanted to real estate agents. Today the
ssource their money from within, so does the Arabs and the Chinese. Let's
promote and support our local businessmen. This week the newspaper had a story
about high school students passing 100% of their tests. WE didn't see any
congrats to these students. I think we should start here
