PHILIPSBURG - The Sint Maarten PRIDE foundation was notified by some concerned Cupecoy residents of illegal building activities on the Cupecoy beach.

A representative of the foundation visited the beach over the weekend and noticed that a developer has built a high concrete wall on the sandy beach covering the natural rock formations that makes the Cupecoy ocean side so special.

Cupecoy Beach is showcased in many of our tourism brochures, marketing and online tourism websites as having a unique rock formation coastline, sand stone cliffs and two natural caves.

While the Cupecoy cliffs and rocky coastline formation are not protected on the Monument list, The Sint Maarten PRIDE foundation recognizes that they are a very unique feature to the islands landscape and should be protected and appreciated for it's natural beauty.

PRIDE is calling on all beach side developers in the Cupecoy area to stop destroying the natural beauty of our landscape for their own personal gain.

In the meantime, the relevant authorities such as the Inspection department, the Prosecutor, the Sector head of Nature and Environment has been apprised of the illegally built wall on the Cupecoy beach.

Sint Maarten PRIDE foundation along with the concerned residents who do appreciate the natural unique beach landmark features, will be paying close attention to the follow up on this situation.

Sint Maarten PRIDE foundation has requested that the illegally built wall be demolished at the expense of the developer.

IF the wall was illegally built, issue a stiff fine... tear down the wall... and
revoke any permits the company currently has.

They should face the walls in stone that maches the cliff similar to what
Saphire Beach Club did.
NOTGOOD AT ALL...   |200.7.39.xxx |2009-12-17 02:29:14
why waste time and money building an ugly gray wall when there was already a
naturally beautiful wall of rock....this make no sense...SXM needs to wake up
and stop allowing these contractors from Europe and these big cities come here
and make out island into a concrete mini city .....this is ridiculous...COME ON
MAN SXM WAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEEE UPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!
Mechanicman   |200.7.55.xxx |2009-12-17 03:23:12
Look at this.. just look at what they do to our land. they kill it and then
leave. After all that goes on with illegal or questionable permits and then this
gets built!! Break it to f**k down. come on government look at this sh*t. open
your eyes.

You ask why do they build that wall.Look how close that building is to the beach
why would they allow that. one good storm and no matter how high they build that
wall the ocean will be in that balcony. There is no way that buiding should be
on the beach like that. Just like Dawn beach they have ruined another beautiful
St. Maarten beach. Nothing but greed.

Good observation about the building to the top of the cliff. That building
should have been built with a set back of a few meters. But no,.....US and
European developers want to be right up under the ocean until a hurricane or
serious swells come in.
I now wonder if that building has a permit and if it
does, was it built according to what the permit requires?
This island is in
serious need of inspectors and enforcement officers-the bad guys keep getting
away with their illegal activities. Who suffers? the people of SXM and the
natural environment.
I would like the Kadaster to check where is the public
access to the Cupecoy beach..because I have searched and cannot find any..all
the land bordering the beach is private-with the last lot belonging to Sudi
Ozkan still undeveloped. Once Ozkan develops his land...locals and tourists
staying at other hotels on the island can see bye bye to Cupecoy Beach...

The wall needs to be broken down. But also the Danny man who gives people nasty
food to eat. His beach bar needs to be broken down he also needs to get a fine.
ugly   |200.7.51.xxx |2009-12-17 15:19:18
What an ugly display of a wall. Cupe coy has a natural rock formation, which is
natur at work. To see a developer, obviously with the permission from our non
existant department of control, constuct such a ugly concrete sea wall if just
crazy. St.Maarten people we are really in deep sleep. Everyday our island is
getting more and more out of our reach.
MAHOMAN   |97.103.225.xxx |2009-12-17 17:46:38
What a great opportunity for the government to show some regard for Cupecoy and
the natural beauty of this strip of beach.
By investigating and VISIBLY doing
something positive they could send the message to future developers as well as
other countries that SXM takes the environment seriously.
Do something
now...that ugly piece of cement should GO !
soualiga, land of salt   |72.252.9.xxx |2009-12-18 04:03:58
When is SXM Pride going to speak out against the filling of the Salt
Pond??
Every-one is talking about the fact that they did not realize that the
filling would take up so much of the Pond. Now there is talk about selling the
land. We soon will not be able to see the pond behind the ugly buildings. This
was not what we had been told. The fish are dying the birds look pathetic. Why
are none of the environmentalists saying anything????
ROZ   |98.212.229.xxx |2009-12-23 11:22:22
Jadira, Stay on this, there is so much illegal stuff going on in the Cupecoy
area, this wall is just one more "permit" problem with more to come.
They say Cupecoy is the "Gold Coast", but it looks more like the trash
coast. Once beautiful beach areas are no longer available to the public,
WRONG!!! Fix it SXM or you will lose tourism completely.

does anyone know what resort this is, and is this wall relatively new?
Erich Kranz   |200.7.52.xxx |2010-03-23 10:44:29
Looks like Ocean Club to me.
