MARIGOT - A fatal road traffic accident took place on Friday morning on the French side of the island.
According to a report issued by the Gendarmes on Friday, shortly before 08:00Hrs on the RN 7, a serious accident took place in the area between Hope and the pond Chevrise.
Despite the intervention of the firefighters and SMUR, two people, in this case a child of nine years and half and a woman of forty years, died.
Four other passengers were injured and taken to hospital in Marigot. Investigators of the community brigades of St. Martin, opened an investigation.
The Gendarmes have performed an initial investigation and have collected evidence in order to understand the circumstances of this accident.
Friday's accident brings to ten (10) the number of deaths on the roads of St. Martin for the year 2009.
The Gendarmes also noted that the severity and frequency of accidents on the roads of the island should lead to more awareness among road users.
They further noted that the causes of the accidents are often linked to dangerous maneuvers combined with the fact the occupants were not wearing safety equipment.
According to our reports the driver was rushing to carry the children to school when the accident happened and as such, high speed may have been the cause of the accident.
One of the victims was flown to Martinique for emergency treatment. It is said that he had suffered a large puncture wound to his head.
Two sisters are also hospitalized, one with a broken hip and the other was hospitalized in an unconscious state.
The driver of the wrecked vehicle did not suffer serious injuries.
