LONDON, England – A former Trinidad and Tobago defender, who played in the English Premier League for Aston Villa and Bolton, has died at the age of 37.
The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association announced the death of Jlloyd Samuel in a statement on its social media platforms on Tuesday, saying he was involved in car crash in England.
Emergency services reportedly rushed to the scene on a country lane in High Legh, Cheshire, after Samuel’s Range Rover collided with a van but tragically, nothing could be done to save the former Trinidad and Tobago player.
Samuel, a full back, represented England at under-21 level before going on to play for Trinidad and Tobago’s senior team.
The TTFA said “the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association and his former national teammates at this time extends deepest condolences to his family members both in the U.K. and here in Trinidad and Tobago.”
Aston Villa held a minute’s applause tonight as a mark of respect for Samuel last night. The team said on Twitter it was deeply saddened to hear of his passing.
