MULLET BAY, St. Maarten - Jesus Antonio Rivera won overall Low Gross during the monthly Medal Play Golf Tournament organized by the St. Maarten Golf Association SMGA. Over the weekend, a total of 19 golfers battled in the hot weather at Mullet Bay, trying to take home the August Medal Play trophy. With a 78 Gross score, Jesus Antonio Rivera was just one stroke better than Steven Mix who scored a 79 Low Gross. PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - The Sport Scholarship training, hosted by the Piper Davis Baseball organization, sponsored by the Ministry ECYS, commenced on Thursday July 27th. Mr. Skeete and Mr. Dixon, two former pro baseball players , addressed local student athletes. The opening of the training began with words of encouragement and inspiration. Mr. Skeete and Mr. Dixon gave the athletes advice on training, playing the respective sports, and possibilities of university or college admittance. Minister Jacobs encouraged the student athletes to listen to the advice of both gentlemen as they have both made it in their respective sports and to strive for greatness in whatever they decide to put their minds to. MULLET BAY, St. Maarten -  Marc van Iersel has won the 2017 Club Champion Match Play competition of the St. Maarten Golf Association SMGA. This annual tournament, better known as the ‘Thomas R. Smith Challenge Cup’ is named after one of its founders and honorable member Tom Smith. During a very exciting final between Marc Van Iersel and Jan Peter Holtland, Van Iersel was able to clinch the title and go 2UP with one hole to play after winning both holes 16 and 17. The victory didn’t come easily as Holtland came out with guns blazing and achieved as much as 4 up after eight holes by playing some extraordinary golf. SIMPSON BAY, St. Maarten – The Kidz at Sea Foundation took 4 students our for a leisurely sail to reward them for their hard work on the second boat that is currently being constructed as part of the Build Your Future project at the Milton Peters College. This program has been made part of the woodwork curriculum in 2015 to provide students with a more elaborate skillset. In early 2016 the first sail boat, Purple Heart, was completed and competitively sailed in the 2016 and 2017 St Maarten Heineken Regatta. The students are keen to complete the second boat before the 2018 regatta and sail more often.
CAY HILL, St. Maarten - For the 2nd time, St. Maarten is playing host to the Dutch Caribbean Women Soccer Cup. The tournament kicked off at the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex Friday night with an opening ceremony, at which time, the four (4) participating teams namely Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire and St. Maarten were introduced.  Notably absent for this year’s championship is the defending champions, Suriname.
