AIRPORT ROAD – On Monday August 28th, the U20 National Basketball team returned from Antigua after defeating St. Kitts, where the team won 82-76 in the LIBA tournament. In 2015, the St. Maarten National team came in second place, but this year, they brought home the championship. The MVP was Mr. Jamal Ireland, an 18 year old student of the Milton Peters College. “The Minister told Ireland and the rest of his team that she expects to see great things from the entire team.” Majority of the team will still be in school and under 20, allowing them to still be eligible to play at the next LIBA tournament. POND ISLAND, St. Maarten  –  St. Maarten basketballers are getting an early jump on TelCell’s September 1 launch of its brand new 4G-LTE mobile data network by sporting the company’s branding logo and colours this week. Members of the St. Maarten Basketball Federation (SMBF) donned their TelCell 4G-LTE Jerseys Sunday, shortly before leaving the island for Antigua where they are competing in the Leeward Islands (LIBA) basketball tournament. They were also presented with a cash donation towards tickets for the trip. MULLET BAY, St. Maarten - Jesus Antonio Rivera won overall Low Gross during the monthly Medal Play Golf Tournament organized by the St. Maarten Golf Association SMGA. Over the weekend, a total of 19 golfers battled in the hot weather at Mullet Bay, trying to take home the August Medal Play trophy. With a 78 Gross score, Jesus Antonio Rivera was just one stroke better than Steven Mix who scored a 79 Low Gross. PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - The Sport Scholarship training, hosted by the Piper Davis Baseball organization, sponsored by the Ministry ECYS, commenced on Thursday July 27th. Mr. Skeete and Mr. Dixon, two former pro baseball players , addressed local student athletes. The opening of the training began with words of encouragement and inspiration. Mr. Skeete and Mr. Dixon gave the athletes advice on training, playing the respective sports, and possibilities of university or college admittance. Minister Jacobs encouraged the student athletes to listen to the advice of both gentlemen as they have both made it in their respective sports and to strive for greatness in whatever they decide to put their minds to. PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - UTS has committed its financial support to the second Dutch Caribbean Women’s Soccer Cup. The three-day event will be held on June 23rd-25th 2017 at the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex. The company will be supporting the organizing committee, Oualichi Womens Soccer Association, with an amount of $ 1,000. The Dutch Caribbean Women’s Soccer Cup is a regional soccer event which highlights the importance of competition, female comradery and team spirit.
